Sericulture is an agro based cottage industry which deals with rearing of silkworms under the artificial or domesticated condition for the extraction of silk from the cocoons. The word sericulture is derived from the Greek word sericoes which means silk and English word culture means rearing.
Sericulture was discovered by HSI-Lingshi from China.

Sericulture is basically agro based cottage industry it provides employment to rural people. It happens economy of rural people it does not require any skill but only delicate in handling the worms. Hence it is ideally suitable for the unskilled family labour, particularly the women aged handicapped and children.
