This kind of poetic expressions made the poet ,the best among American poets. The poem is thematically a simple one. The theme of the poem is the youth and its temporariness. The youth is a symbol of freshness and spirit. The message of the poem is that everyone should make the best use of everyone’s youth before it flies away with its flying feet. Structurally, the poem has three stanzas. Each stanza has five lines. Totally the poem has fifteen lines.

There are gains for all our losses,

There are balms for all our pains

But when youth ,the dream ,departs

It takes something from our hearts

And It never comes again.

In the first stanza of the poem, the poet tells us about the possibilities of gains for our losses and enough balms or healings for our pains. The third line of the poem is the heart of the poet’s universal poetic expression. He quotes that the dream and youth are the two faces of the same coin. The youth is the another name for dream , which is colorful in every one’s life. The poet warns us that while it departs from us it takes away something valuable as well as colorful life from our hearts which we cannot get back in our lifespan.

We are stronger and are better,

Under manhood sterner reign

Still we feel that something sweet

Followed youth with flying feet

And will never come again

In the second stanza of the poem ,The poet universally differentiate the two important stages of human life . one is youth and another one is manhood. The manhood here is not using in the context of gender bias but in general .it applies the both –male and female. He quotes that manhood is followed by youth. In manhood we are very stronger and better enough but without youth which has flying feet and something has taken away the sweetness is valuable to human race. The poet says that once the sweet youth vanishes it never comes again.

Something beautiful is vanished

And we sigh for it in vain

We behold it everywhere

On the earth, and in the air

But it never comes again.

In the last stanza of the poem, the poet says if youth vanishes beauty disappears from human life. The poet has been addressing the youth as beauty. He satirically says finally that we are searching the beauty of our life in air, on the earth or everywhere or in our surroundings after it vanishes from us, which it never comes again in our life.

To conclude, the poet calls the youth as dream in the first stanza of the poem.In the second stanza , he personifies the youth as a bird which has flying feet. In the third stanza of the poem, he declares youth as vanishable beauty. any how the crucial truth is Human Life is one time gift of Nature it lose it ,it never comes again or we cannot get it back.

The poet – Richard Henry Stoddard was an American poet ,critic and editor.
